Twitter Lists was rolled out on OctoberOctober reviewsOctober reviews 15th to a very small number of TwitterTwitterTwitter users. It was then rolled out to 5% of twitter users on the 22nd, and then to the general public.

What’s Twitter Lists good for?

You may not yet be convinced about the usefulness of Twitter lists, or you may think that it’s just another way of complicating the very simple service. Twitter Lists is actually a great way of both organizing your Twitter followers, while increasing your own popularity on Twitter.

Organize your Tweeps:

Ever wish you can filter out all of the “Make 45k in three minutes by filling out a survey” tweets from the awesome content your tweeps put out there? Now you can! Just take your favorite tweeps and put them in a list. Check out the great content on my Social media Must Follow List:

So instead of getting “Chash4Gold” tweets – I’m getting Chris Brogan and Sharon Feder tweets!

Manage your contacts:

If you just want to split your contacts up into lists of different types of users, you can do that as well.  Split your contacts up into categories. Separate your Techie friends from your Social Mediasocial mediasocial media mavens – your friends from school from the ones you work with. Check out their tweets and respond by category instead of haphazardly! This will greatly improve the quality of your tweets.

Suggest Great Tweeps to others:

Also, let other people know about great people to follow! I didn’t call my Social Media Must Follow list that for nothing. I want people to follow the people on this list so they can get great Social Media content all the time! It also makes you a more credible source. If people see who you’re following, and get great content from it – they’re more likely to respect you as a Social Media maven, and trust you to always give them what they’re looking for.

Remember: Be the authority. Suggest constructive things to people – like who to follow – and you’ll gain a following of people who want to hear what you have to say. It all comes back to building trust.
