Where Does “W00t” Come From?

I was wondering where the word w00t came from the other day. For those who are not familiar with the word – it’s spelled with a W, zero, zero, T. It’s widely used in muti-player games like Warcraft, chats, and more rarely, but still used on TwitterTwitterTwitter.

So here’s what I found! According to WikipediaWikipediaWikipedia:

The word “W00t is a Leet corruption of the exclamation “Woot!”, meaning “Hooray”. The term rose to popularity sometime during the 1990s and is popular on the InternetInternetInternet, especially in MMORPGS. Both the exclamation and the Leet spelling are of uncertain origin. Many explanations have been offered, but none cite any reliable research or definitive sources. At this time, any explanation proffered without proper citations is mere speculation.

In my research on where the word W00t came from, I was very surprised to find that Merriam-Webster had made w00t the word of the year in 2007! Really? No better words for 2007?

Here’s a video that accurately portrays my frustration. And this guy is pretty funny, too!

I actually think that the word Nerdfighter is super awesome and should be considered for 2009! Oh, wait – “Unfriend” was the word this year. That’s actually pretty cool. I think that only tech-related words have been added the past few years.

Well, see you later, Nerdfighters!
